Dandruff

Dandruff is a common scalp disorder affecting a variety of populations. Dandruff causes a dry, itchy scalp and flaking of dead skin. This chronic scalp condition typically appears after puberty and is most common in adults.

Causes and Risk Factors of Dandruff 

  • Fungi
  • Family history and Genetic predispositions
  • Weather changes
  • Natural scalp oil or sebum production: Excessive secretion of natural scalp oil creates a favourable environment for various fungal growth and leads to dandruff. 
  • Bacteria like Staphylococcus are correlated with dandruff. 

Symptoms of Dandruff 

  • Flaking of scalp, essence of white or greyish dry flakes or scales present on scalp, and hair. 
  •  Itching
  • Redness and oily patches on the scalp 
  • These flakes fall off on clothes, shoulders, and back 

Diagnosis of Dandruff 

  • Detailed Medical History and Scalp examination. 

Treatment of Dandruff 

  • Medicated shampoos
  • Ointments 
  • Oral Medications 

Tips to Avoid Dandruff

  • Regular brushing of hair increases the blood circulation to the scalp
  • Consider massaging the head with oil 2  hours before bathing at least twice a week 
  • Eat a nutritious Diet, a balanced diet 
  • Drink adequate water 

Dandruff can progress to chronic eczema; to avoid such consequences, it is advisable to consult a doctor promptly.
